Is there anyone on here that can offer me advise/help regarding a 2 way radio system. I currently have a walkie talkie with 2 sets of headphones that we use for horse riding instruction. Ideally we want the mic that the instructor uses to be open all the time so that she can continually talk into it. I have tried sticking down the button but it requires a constant hard pressure and doesn’t work very well. Does anyone have any suggestions or know someone who is into walkie talkies who might be able to help?
Many radios have a vox facility. they switch into transmit when you speak. They’re not perfect because they tend to clip the very first syllable, but with practice, you can extend the words, perhaps putting a ‘phrrrr’ before each sentence, to force the thing into transmit. You could use a headset, and hardwire the PTT contact, but keep in mind battery life is designed to have 5% transmit, 5% receive and 90% standby. Permanent TX can flatten a battery very, very quickly. Do a bit if googling for ‘vox’ in 2 way radio or walkie-talky
Do you know is there such a thing as an earpiece and mic that you don’t need to press a button to transmit a message. The problem we have is that the instructor has arthritis and finds it hard to keep pressing the button to transmit so I am trying to find a solution to this.
There are a number of VOX compatible headsets and PTT earpieces available. VOX (Voice Operated Transmit) as mentioned earlier allows someone to talk hands-free.
here is a short video that explains what VOX is and how it works. Radio 101- Using VOX on two way radios
A VOX compatible accessory such as an earpiece with an in-line mic typically has a switch that changes from PTT (Push-To-Talk) to VOX mode. When the switch is activate, the mic is always on and listening for any noise that will activate VOX on the radio to pick up and transmit audio.
While it isn’t perfect, on most VOX equipped radios, the sensitivity can be adjusted somewhat to fit your environment and needs.
