This was a good episode. I appreciate how you compared the new KG-935H to several different radios including the KG-Q10H. I have recently purchased the Q10H and am still learning my way around it. If you had released the 935H a month earlier I would probably purchased it just because the 935G+ is my favorite handheld. However, after listening to your podcast I think I made the right choice. I am sure the 935H is great but I am enjoying the form factor and bells and whistles on the Q10H. I have used all manner of HAM HTs over the years including Kenwoods and Yaesus. I prefer the Wouxun radios over just about every HT I have had. The quality is top notch. All of my GMRS radios are Wouxun and I like them all. I am surprised that since yall have dipped your toes in the Bluetooth pond with the KG-S88G+ you didn’t include BT on this new radio. Thanks for the podcasts.

Just got my 935H. BT would have been a nice addition.

I’m already finding this easier to use than my Yaesu FT-60 (same basic layout as my 935G+).

Im pretty sure the KG-935H i recived yesterday is Defective it can only listen i Unlocked it to do testing for a video and I programmed a few Gmrs repeaters in it for testing and it can hear every Frequency i have tested it on but when you try to tranmisit it gives you the screw you tone on amateur frequencies i have tried simplex for ham and gmrs and they wont work either i have gone over and over with btwr software as well as used chirp to read everything and all frequencies and pl tones are correctly set in radio for ham repeaters as well as gmrs repeater the radio refuses to TX on anything will not kick back the repeater nothing i belive there is a PL Tone encode and decode issue were its not transmitting the correct PL tone even though they are Set Correctly which sucks because i have had the radio for less then 17 hours and i cant even use it for anything other then Listening.

The KG-935H is an Amateur radio and is not designed to operate on the GMRS band. Whenever you try to transmit outside of band, the radio will give you that tone you mentioned above. Unfortunately, unlocking the radio is venturing into an area that may have adverse side effects and is unsupported. Chirp is also known to damage radios when used to program radios it is not designed for (Chirp does not support the 935H yet.) The problems you’re experiencing are most likely a direct result of unlocking and modifying the radio.

People forget that Chirp is user developed, and sends radios a stream of data, in the format of the read. People then modify the strings to add in what appear to be the correct data. Sometimes they get it right, sometimes they get it wrong by not realising some data will conflict. Kydera for example, employ some handshaking so their CPS knows which radio is connected and will not allow the code plug for an 880 to be sent to a 300. The radios are 99% the same thing, but have some critical differences. Chirp does not handshake and check, and simply lets you swap data.it however, has a habit of turning the tuning knob into a parameter selector, sometimes permanently. I’m a Brit and noticed the US rules requiring radios to be prevented from transmitting where they shouldn’t. We don’t have that in Europe, thank goodness. I read all over the internet the various methods to open them up to wider coverage, but I would advise caution because of the warranty situation. I get radios back with updated and often wrong firmware tweaks. I’ve changed our policy now. Fixing them is charged at our out of warranty price. If I have to try to fix it and it takes me an hour, they pay. Some I can’t fix and if it’s a firmware flash that caused it, I treat it like the old days when people would open up their brand new Icom and snip out diodes to widen the coverage, often cutting the wrong component! If a radio is sold with the spec saying ham band tx, opening them up is a choice the buyer makes at their own risk. Do the FCC take action?

Possible Battery/Radio issue with the KG 935H :zap:
Note; While holding the 935H in your Right hand while transmitting, you MIGHT feel a charge from the Positive charge contact on the rear of the battery ! The First Edition TID H-8 Radios/ Batteries had this same issue. I noticed this problem while transmitting in medium and High power on 146.430mhz. It won’t Hurt you, but you WILL move your hand ! n9zas
