Been a while - but the VHF version has UHF frequencies as a sub band - press and hold the band button and then you can enter UHF frequencies for receive. There is no AM or indeed any frequency below two metres available, so no aircraft band - it starts at 144MHz. Keypad entry assumes the furst digit is set - the Icom’s of the same period used the same system. 145 just requires you to enter 45, it knows the first digit is 1. Hence why the sub band is needed to allow the ‘4’ to be automatically inserted. UK versions were 144-146, while the US had 144-148.
I must have had this unit modified years ago, found this post https://groups.google.com/g/fr.rec.radio.amateur/c/tIcF8cuh7NA?pli=1 which talks about modifying the unit.
By doing the following I was able to get 118 - 136 Mhz working but not 108 - 118 Mhz
Press PTT + VFO, then POWER ON.
Press F key for 1 sec. Then press LOW key.
I was able to pickup a few Schiphol Channels
Don’t sweat it. If it picks up airband in AM and you are happy with the reception, there are no voice channels below 118MHz anyway; it is all navigation channels only 108 to 118MHz.
