We often head out with our MINI club for rallys, and would like some recommendations for a radio that would give us decent/superior range and voice quality.
I had seen a pair of unidens that had a private call feature when in a group. Does the concept work, and in a desireable radio?
VOX option also sounds intreging… is there one that could do rallys, and also work with our full face motorcycle helmets? (or seperate beast nec?)
Thanks for any suggestions/input!
 OK… I see others are interested, but no input, so I will let you know what I have found out after some research and talking to a two-way radio guru… aka Jake,
at Banoggle.com or buytwowayradio
There are some really nice 5-watt radios out this year for us “normal people”
… the afore mentioned (in a review thread) Motorola T9500 series, and the Midland GXT 710VP4 or 800VP4 at the top. (The Midlands 750 and 850 look good in the woods)
For rallys, etc, all the radios would do very nicely… but you are paying for the Motorola name, and the Midlands are as good, if not better. (Great reputation too) What swayed me to definately go Midland was their motorcycle helmet headset. (Motorola doesn’t offer one, and you can bet it would be pricier if they did.)
OK… so Midland… 710 or 800?
waterpoof vs water repellent… 142 privacy codes vs 121… direct call option vs none (your group must all have the same model radio)… headphones included vs an option … otherwise alllllll the same.
Because some have not been thrilled with the headset, and doubt I would use often, I went with the 710. I also picked up a APH2 helmet headset to see how well it installs and works. I can let you know what we find, if you are interested.
Good luck with your radio search!
I am interested in your evaluation of the APH2 headset. I just ordered a pair of GXT800s and am planning on using them for my motorcycle group rides.
Thanks
