Radio for hunting alone

What would be a good radio for deer hunting by myself. Mainly just want to listen to whats going on around me(while bored) by scanning channels. Also to be able to reach someone in case of an emergency. Are most people using privacy codes,etc. making this a difficult thing to do nowadays? I say this because I used to get a lot of “action” with a cheap set of radios, but in the last couple of yrs. I don’t seem to hear much. Any help would be appreciated.

Bring a cell phone. if there’s no cell reception where you hunt then you can purchase a beacon/ gps system that will allow people to find you and if your in trouble you can send out a distress signal.

there is no one channel that is monitored on gmrs radios in case of emergency. make sure someone knows where you are and bring a cell phone too.
