Is my midland mxt 275 deffective?

Hello, I’m new to the mobile radio world. I just recently purchased an mxt 275 for travelling and offroading and it would only transmit to my midland handheld radio. I tried it with my Retivis frs handheld and it wouldn’t transmit to it. However, the Retivis transmits to the mxt 275. Is this common? I also tried connecting to several repeaters around my area but to no avail. Thanks!

The snag is just programming - the GMRS and the FRS are not totally compatible - GMRS has some channels that don’t exist on the other, but the real problem is simply that the Midland has ‘privacy’ codes that won’t automatically be in the Retevis. A receive and transmit pair of tones are what enables the midland to talk to the other Midland. It’s their own scheme. If you have the programming software for the Retevis you can look up the Midland ones and replicate them in the Retevis. I doubt it’s faulty.

Thanks for the insight. I almost want to purchase another handheld and try it out just to prove to myself that it isn’t faulty. Going trailriding today, hopefully i can pick up some signals and transmit and make some radio friends. Thanks again!
