Hi
I currently use two cheap walkie talkie for security between my house and my parents, (400 yards). We leave them on at night, however its a pain in the bum when the local taxi companies etc come across them in the middle of the night and waken the family
Is there an alternative to these cheap walkie talkies, which would have less of a chance of someone else broadcasting on them.
I live in Ireland, maybe the alternative could be purchased in Amazon.
Sir, Radio communication for 400 yards would be pretty simple to achieve. Having the privacy your asking for would be another equation. The Motorola MR350R, MR355R, MR356R radios are the FRS?GMRS radios that is commonly used. These radios have several channels to select and use, plus a lot of privacy codes also select-able that help eliminate others from connecting o your radios. These radios can be purchased off EBay or Amazon, Wal-Mart, etc., and inexpensive
However, there is another radio that I am going to suggest to you, if the cost is not an issue. The Motorola DTR series radios are digital radios. They function between each other right out of the box. In order for anyone to be heard on your two radios, they too would have to have the identical Motorola DTR 410/550/650 radio operating "RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX WITH NO PROGRAMMING being done. However, if you wish to use these radios completely private, you can program them using your computer and software that is downloadable from the internet, to either a private or public channel you may chose, making them your own private radio network. There is ample and abundant programming possibilities for these radios. However, I am not certain what you are allowed to use in your country. The Motorola DTR radios operate on the 900MHZ FHSS UHF frequency, which in the US and Canada are license free radios. Being digital every communication is completely clear and static free. Communicating at 400 yards would be a breeze as these radios are giving us roughly a 2 mile radius out in the open and excellent range in a large building complex. One draw back with the digital radio might come into play for you though, if your dealing with older parents. Being digital, you must wait for two beeps to sound after pushing the PTT switch. The two beeps is a hand shake of the radios. If you start talking before the two beeps, your voice will not be transmitted, thus not heard by the other party. With this being said, the Motorola DTR650 also has a feauture tha may be very good for you. The DTR650 has a management mode. One of the features of this mode enables you to open the mic on one of the radios in your network, (your parents), enabling you to listen in. With the mic open on your parents radio, you could hear them, but you would have to close their mic, before they could hear you, should you wish to speak to them.
NONE of the items you mentioned will work. The Original poster is in Ireland. There is no FRS, GMRS, MURS or 900 Mhz ISM there. The radios you mentioned only work in thew United States.
