Headsets Interchangeable

Are the headsets for the Midland FRS/GMRS and Cobra radios interchangeable?

I don’t think so. I just purchased 2 Midlands and found the Midlands wouldn’t work with my old speaker/mic’s. The Midlands plug has 2 insulators on the mic side of the plug. I think the Cobra’s are the same as the Motorola’s.

Hope this helps,
Andy

I also do not think so. My Midland units require a two pin plug in order to accomplish the same function as my Cobra does with only one sub-mimi phone plug.

I found it very interesting that Cobra found a way to have four separate functions managed with only a three wire system.

The speaker, microphone, push to talk and charging are remotely accomplished with employing the sleeve of the sub-mini phone plug as the common ground, the ring as the microphone function that when open places the receive mode active and when loaded with an electret condenser microphone having less then 5K Ohms impedance activates the transmitting mode.

This ring also is the + input for charging the batteries when not employing the charging pod, with reference to the - at the sleeve.

The tip to sleeve is the remote speaker function.

I have confirmed that with more then 100 feet of remote cable connected to this one jack, no problem is encountered with a roof mounted unit radio remotely controlled by my home made indoor base speaker microphone unit.

Doing so I have increased the range many additional miles.

I like the Cobra engineering much better then my Midland units.
