Well, I purchased the HAM Radio license manual and will be studying to take the test. What type of Ham radio is best for a beginner like me? I see a couple of beginner starter sets on buytwowayradios.com Are these good?

As with anything else, there will be differing opinions on what is a best first rig. Some hams will insist that you start with old equipment that has changed hands multiple times so you can learn “from the ground up” as they did. Others will suggest you buy the biggest and most expensive rig out there, and others will suggest you start at the low end and work your way up.
The most important way to learn is to just do it. You can’t do it if you don’t have a radio to do it with. Most new hams don’t have thousands of dollars just lying around, waiting for use on the purchase of expensive equipment, and in my opinion, spending an exorbitant amount of money right off the bat when getting your feet wet in a new hobby, even if you have it to throw around, really doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.
Operating old, used equipment can be fun, but if the gear has issues due to age, wear and tear, it can frustrate a new and inexperienced ham (and even some old ones) to the point that it may possibly discourage them from pursuing it further.

Of course, there are many facets to ham radio. This is just one of them. Speaking from personal experience, I think that is well worth their consideration.
