Hi I’ve been given 2 rexon RL 328 walkie talkies they work fine at a short distance but after a few meters the communication stops. Is it something I can resolve by altering the settings on the hand sets or is this a major fault and the hand sets are broken?

The real problem is going to be a real signal strength issue - as in there just isn’t enough RF coming out, or a fault on the other radio that prevents the RF getting into the receiver. If BOTH radios exhibit the same fault, it’s very unlikely to be a proper fault - the same fault on both is too suspicious. Sometimes it can be because of programming - two radios set on nearly but not the quite frequency will often work very close in because the RF level swamps the front end of the receiver, so it gets through by brute force. Can you check they’re both programmed exactly the same?
