Baofeng UV5-R problems

Just got a pair of Baofeng UV5 -R for a friend to program I am running windows 7 have the Prolific cable driver installed as well as CHIRP for windows . I try to upload from radio get error Radio did not respond . Tried Baofeng own software same deal . Try to manually program and get channels in and try to communicate with each radio or my Yaesu Nothing all channels channel off sets same steps direction same ctss tones same can’t get it. Please Help lol

The error could be due to a number of reasons, however, chances are it is likely the cable and driver.

For starters, try this.
How to install the Baofeng USB programming cable and software

Where was the programming cable purchased?

It’s a Baofang programing cable . Friend got it on amazon Second I am running a 64 bit system on windows 7

I did understand that from your initial post. The reason I asked where it was purchased is because if it was purchased from Buy Two Way Radios you should have received a CD with another version of the cable driver that would work with the Baofeng cable. Baofeng uses a clone of the Prolific chip in their USB cable and the driver installed by default in Windows may not work with it. You will likely need to locate an older version of the Prolific driver and install it, then manually force Windows to choose that driver.

The instructions in the link posted above should guide you.

Well I uninstalled the old driver reinstalled the one in the link and shaved to radio connection everything is set up as indicated still get error Radio did not respond is turned on

Must not be a fix have 2 paper weights

I can try to help you troubleshoot but I really need more specifics. “Everything is set up as indicated” is rather vague.

  1. After you installed the driver, did you go into the Device Manager and force Windows to load it?

  2. What is the version number of the driver listed in the Device Manager?

  3. What Com ports are listed in the Device Manager?

  4. Are there any yellow exclamation marks next to any of the com ports listed?

  5. Have you tried installing the cable on a different USB port?

  6. Is this a desktop or laptop computer?

  7. Have you tried to install the programming cable and driver in a different Windows machine?

OK

  1. Yes

2.Prolific USB to Serial Comm port ( com4)
Driver Date 7/31/2007
Driver Version 3.2.0.0

3.Com 4
4. No Yellow triangle
5. Yes all 4
6. Desktop
7. Yes same operating system though

There have been issues in the past with counterfeit or bad chips in cables sourced from China. If the cable was purchased from Amazon, then you need to go back and see where the cable came from.

It is very possible the cable itself may be bad. You may want to contact the seller and return it or have it replaced.

You most likely have a small hardware issue. After you insert the cable, when you go to read the radio, really REALLY squeeze the cable into the radio. Sometimes the radio doesn’t line up good enough the cable. If you really squeeze the cable and it works, then just take a Razer knife and trim off some of the plastic on the cable plug. Doesn’t hurt the cable at all.

The easiest way to quick check this is if you plug in a speaker mic, and it doesn’t work or has really light audio, then the plug on the radio is a little mis aligned.

Hope this helps.

the error that you mention is "Run-time error 8020: "

If yes, it occurs because rolific driver version is higher than v3.2.0.0
you have to Downgrade to v3.2.0.0 and the error should go away.
