I am experimenting with the settings for this but I keep stumbling into what appears uncrossable obstacle involving the fact that I cannot assign a key to execute this command.
Would appreciate some guidance on how to program this particular model to do this and whether it can be done or not.
Since I last posted, I have learned a thing or two and now know how to transmit dtmf codes. So that part taken care of.
Now to see if I can correctly assign unique id’s to each radio. What makes this tricky (for me at least) is the fact that there are 3 different areas in the menu that this can be done.
But, I will figure this out eventually. What takes a lot of time is the fact that I only own 1 of these models and have to wait until I see a friend which has the exact same model so we can test the code plugs I set up.
So, you are trying to see if you can remotely disable your radio? I have one radio that is supposed to have that feature but I have never tried it. 30 years ago I worked in public safety and the stun function would have been a usable feature for lost or stolen radios. If that function existed back then our department didn’t use it.
It looks like the main issue is not the setting itself, but whether the 5RH PRO firmware supports assigning that specific command to a programmable key.
I would suggest checking the device manual or programming software to confirm if the command is available in the key assignment menu. Some models allow only predefined functions to be mapped to keys, while advanced commands may require a workaround or may not be supported at all.
If you can share the exact command you are trying to assign, the programming software/firmware version, and the steps you have already tried, someone may be able to confirm whether this is possible or suggest an alternative method.
You cannot assign a key with a specific pre-programmed command. I’ve checked the radio settings and the software.
In the DTMF menu you have the option to program a code for stun and kill. I have used 101 & 102 respectively.
Then obviously each radio needs to be assigned a unique id. Lets say for example the radio I wish to stun is assigned 121 as id.
Then (provided both radios are on the same frequency, I will type using the radio keypad - 101*121# and press Ptt
Then the recipient radio should be stunned. The manual (or the internet) states that both codes is subject to a 25 second timer which you cannot disable.
But I haven’t found the time yet to test this. I have a friend with the exact same radio and we’re going camping during August next month. We should get a chance then.
Ok some interesting feedback for those members interested. I’d love to hear your ideas on this also.
We got to test the stun function.
First of all, the software only makes provision for stun and kill codes. No revive code to program but there is a timer involved which can be set for a maximum of 25 seconds before the radio will revive itself (in theory)
Our choice of codes were 101 for stun and 102 for kill. Master radio doing the stunning had ID 120 assigned to it and the slave radio to be stunned 121
So in the master radio you will type in DTMF as follows 101*121 and press Ptt
So the particular frequency on which you transmitted will be stunned, but not temporarily. Kinda permanent and only that frequency. So it will Rx but not Tx. Well it does Tx but no audio comes through.
Google gave a couple of revive codes to transmit to it to revive it and tells me that these are supposedly general/master revive codes used by Baofeng (two of which were 103 and 104) but this seems very unlikely that they would follow exactly numerically after the codes that I selected purely by chance.
I tried it anyway and transmitting them resulted in the slave radio to become un-stunned for one transmission only wherein audio came through. The moment that transmission is done, there is no audio transmitting from it on that particular frequency.
This happens every time you transmit this supposedly revival code, same story. Unstunned for one transmission only.
We also tried resetting the radio on its own menu wiping everything and getting it back to factory mode and loading a code plug that it had before stunning it but this didn’t work either.
Even removing the stun and kill codes from it and rewriting a completely new code plug didn’t solve this. Important to note that this happens even in VFO mode without this frequency being saved.
What are your thoughts? Did something become corrupted? Anything else I can try?
Since you haven’t tried appending the # key to your original string yet, this is the most logical next step once you have the slave radio back.
In Chinese radio firmware (Baofeng, QYT, TYT), the * symbol acts as an activation delimiter (Do this to that radio), whereas the # symbol acts as the deactivation terminator.
The Code to Transmit: Send 101*121# from the master radio.
What it tells the firmware: “Deactivate (#) Stun Mode (101) on target radio (121).”
