I am considering obtaining a 12volt plug with a T connector for my radio which plugs into the cigarette lighter accessory plug in my vehicle. Does anyone know what the SAFE Maximum Wattage that can be used from a radio ? Some hams have told me that it can cause damage to the vehicle by overheating the wires and even start a fire unless it is wired directly to the battery.
Any suggestions or advice ?
Thanks in advance.

Suggestions or advice? Yeah, don’t do it.
Generally speaking, it’s not a good idea to power a mobile radio from the cigarette lighter socket because the wiring powering the lighter may not be heavy enough to carry the current, especially when working at full power, among other issues.
Following the radio manufacturer’s instructions is always the best bet.

They’re usually fused at 15A, although the one in my van is rated to 20A, and this is where for convenience (as in distance) my radio is powered - using tap in connectors so the cigarette lighter socket still functions for my USB adaptor. My Yaesu draws just under 10A on high power. Check your manual for the current requirements.
