Hello, I have been considering replacing my cell phone with a two way radio. I understand that there are range issues, so I am wondering what kind of radio would be right for me. I want to be able to keep in touch with my wife while I’m out running errands and the like. What are my options concerning CBs or more powerful radios, or larger antennas. Basically, what can I do to get more range. hopefully in an affordable way. That is why I came here first to get some informed opinions before I purchase. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I use Icom 4 watt UHF portable radios on the GMRS frequencies (I have my license) for my wife and I. There is a local GMRS repeater that is free and we are able to get 15 mile radius coverage. There are places (buildings) where the cell phones don’t work and the radios do. Plus we have the direct channels that we can talk radio to radio when within range (and on the cruise ship which we use annually).
